{"id":10014,"date":"2021-04-13T09:48:27","date_gmt":"2021-04-13T14:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/candorhealthed.org\/?p=10014"},"modified":"2021-04-13T09:48:27","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T14:48:27","slug":"consent-lays-the-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/candorhealthed.org\/es\/consent-lays-the-foundation\/","title":{"rendered":"El consentimiento sienta las bases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual health education is typically thought of as a class taught in middle school or high school with information on preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, the reality is that it&#8217;s so much more. One area that has recently garnered more attention is the notion of consent. Sexual education not only teaches young people about their bodies, but also begins to lay the foundation about consent &#8211; what it is and, most importantly, what it isn&#8217;t &#8211; and what is considered sexual assault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1374 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/candorhealthed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/iStock_000066712527_Large-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Assault is defined as \u201cany nonconsensual sexual act proscribed by Federal, tribal, or State law, including when the victim lacks capacity to consent (Department of Justice, 2020).\u201d Even the federal definition of sexual assault includes the phrase \u201cnonconsensual,\u201d and the general public is aware of the phrase \u201cno means no.\u201d However, there is still ambiguity around what that really means from a practical sense, such as does \u201cmaybe mean no\u201d or \u201cno doesn\u2019t mean convince me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to teach consent, there must be a definition of consent established in clear language. The Rape and Incest National Network (RAINN) makes the point that while the legal definitions of consent does vary by state, consent to sexual activity is defined as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an agreement between participants to engage in sexual activity (RAINN, n.d.).\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When teaching consent educatio<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10015 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/candorhealthed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image005-300x202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n to younger students, Candor Health Education defines consent as \u201ca freely given verbal yes.\u201d In sexual health education, consent is taught in a multitude of ways with some lessons being as simple as \u201cno means ____\u201d or using the F.R.I.E.S acronym to describe consent which stands for <\/span><b>F<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reely Given, <\/span><b>R<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eversible, <\/span><b>I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nformed, <\/span><b>E<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nthusiastic, and <\/span><b>S<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pecific.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the method used to teach consent in sexual health education programs, it is a necessary part of a sexual health curriculum. Consent education empowers students to stand up for others if they ever witness a situation that may appear to be non-consensual. Consent education also empowers students to make informed decisions when they do and do not want to engage in any sexual activity or other activities including access to their time in general.
