Algunos de mis amigos estaban entusiasmados porque sent\u00edan mucha curiosidad por sus cuerpos cambiantes y por lo que iba a ocurrir cuando nos convirti\u00e9ramos en adolescentes, pero yo no. Yo lo tem\u00eda. Cuando llegu\u00e9 a casa ese d\u00eda, mi madre me pregunt\u00f3 si ten\u00eda alguna duda. Le dije que no y ah\u00ed termin\u00f3 la conversaci\u00f3n. El resto de mi educaci\u00f3n sexual me la dieron mis amigos, la revista Seventeen, la MTV y las pel\u00edculas, como a muchos de mis compa\u00f1eros de entonces. Cuando pienso en ello, s\u00e9 que mi madre era producto de su generaci\u00f3n y de su entorno. Desde luego, nunca habl\u00f3 de estas cosas con su propia madre, y no era un tema que se sintiera c\u00f3moda tratando con sus hijos. Cuando los padres se sienten inc\u00f3modos, los hijos se dan cuenta y tambi\u00e9n se sienten inc\u00f3modos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2989\" src=\"https:\/\/candorhealthed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Scan0036-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/>Muchos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, como profesora de quinto curso, fui yo quien llev\u00f3 a mis alumnos de quinto curso al Centro Robert Crown en la misma excursi\u00f3n que yo tem\u00eda cuando ten\u00eda su edad. Vi de primera mano la misma aprensi\u00f3n y anticipaci\u00f3n que en mi propia experiencia. Tuve la suerte de ver c\u00f3mo se desarrollaba ante m\u00ed este rito de iniciaci\u00f3n. A\u00f1o tras a\u00f1o, ve\u00eda c\u00f3mo los inc\u00f3modos alumnos de quinto curso se transformaban en j\u00f3venes curiosos y deseosos de hacer preguntas perspicaces.<\/p>\n<p>Una valiosa aportaci\u00f3n como profesor fue el enfoque c\u00f3modo que mostraron los educadores sanitarios al hablar de estos temas dif\u00edciles. Las presentaciones me ayudaron a prepararme para los cambios que estaban experimentando mis alumnas. Todos los a\u00f1os, al menos una alumna comenzaba su ciclo menstrual durante las clases. Agradec\u00ed que estas alumnas conocieran la pubertad y se sintieran c\u00f3modas cont\u00e1ndomelo. Pude ver un nivel de confianza que s\u00f3lo se consigue cuando se tienen los conocimientos necesarios para saber qu\u00e9 esperar.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando lleg\u00f3 el momento de que mis propios hijos tuvieran el programa de pubertad en su colegio me qued\u00e9 de piedra. \u00bfRealmente son lo suficientemente mayores para aprender esto ya? A pesar de haber asistido a estos programas durante a\u00f1os, me sorprendi\u00f3 lo dif\u00edcil que era hablar de estos temas con mis propios hijos. Como padres queremos que nuestros hijos lleguen a <em>us<\/em> cuando tengan preguntas, no a Google ni a otros recursos en l\u00ednea. Los temas de educaci\u00f3n sexual deben formar parte de una conversaci\u00f3n continua que debemos plantear una y otra vez cuando surja la ocasi\u00f3n. Puede ser la letra de una canci\u00f3n que o\u00edmos mientras conducimos, una escena de una pel\u00edcula que vemos juntos o un TikTok viral. Una educaci\u00f3n sexual sana incluye estar al d\u00eda de lo que nuestros hijos ven y escuchan, as\u00ed como mantener una pol\u00edtica de puertas abiertas. Los momentos m\u00e1s oportunos para intentar una conversaci\u00f3n significativa pueden ser con tu hijo uno a uno; tal vez cuando est\u00e1is paseando al perro, conduciendo en el coche o cuando entras en su habitaci\u00f3n a altas horas de la noche (un momento en el que los adolescentes parecen ser los m\u00e1s habladores). No es una sola cosa lo que decimos o hacemos, sino un mill\u00f3n de peque\u00f1as cosas lo que dar\u00e1 lugar a un di\u00e1logo abierto con nuestros hijos.<\/p>\n<p>Ahora, como empleada de Candor Health Education, veo de primera mano el impacto que tienen nuestros programas en los j\u00f3venes. Muchas cosas han cambiado a lo largo de los a\u00f1os y en toda nuestra organizaci\u00f3n, pero el impulso de capacitar a los j\u00f3venes para que tomen decisiones informadas sigue siendo el mismo.
