Pens\u00f3: \"Tengo c\u00e1ncer\".<\/p>\n<p>Joe es uno de los m\u00e1s de 13.000 hombres a los que se diagnostica c\u00e1ncer oral por VPH cada a\u00f1o. El virus del papiloma humano es la infecci\u00f3n de transmisi\u00f3n sexual (ITS) causante de la actual epidemia de c\u00e1ncer oral entre los hombres. Aunque los tumores orales se han relacionado durante mucho tiempo con el tabaquismo y el consumo excesivo de alcohol, su n\u00famero ha disminuido en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os. En cambio, los tumores relacionados con el VPH han aumentado m\u00e1s de un 300% en los \u00faltimos 20 a\u00f1os, de modo que el virus se encuentra en el 70% de todos los nuevos c\u00e1nceres orales. Mientras que el VPH tiene graves consecuencias para las mujeres, como el c\u00e1ncer de cuello uterino, cuando se trata de c\u00e1ncer oral, los hombres tienen cuatro veces m\u00e1s probabilidades de ser diagnosticados de c\u00e1nceres orales relacionados con el VPH que las mujeres. Investigaciones recientes indican que los hombres son m\u00e1s propensos a contraer infecciones por VPH y que su sistema inmunitario es menos capaz de combatirlas. A\u00fan no se sabe exactamente por qu\u00e9 ocurre esto.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan Ashish Deshmukh, destacado investigador del VPH en la Universidad de Florida, mientras que los m\u00e9todos de cribado del c\u00e1ncer de cuello de \u00fatero en las mujeres permiten una detecci\u00f3n precoz, no existen opciones de cribado similares para los c\u00e1nceres orales. La principal vacuna, Gardasil, suele requerir dos inyecciones y, en algunos casos, tres. Vacunar a los ni\u00f1os protege a las ni\u00f1as contra la mayor\u00eda de los c\u00e1nceres de cuello de \u00fatero y tanto a los ni\u00f1os como a las ni\u00f1as contra una amplia gama de c\u00e1nceres orales, como los de lengua, paladar blando, am\u00edgdalas y otros, incluido el c\u00e1ncer de garganta. Cuando Joe Mueller, estudiante universitario, se enter\u00f3 de que le hab\u00edan diagnosticado c\u00e1ncer de garganta, se qued\u00f3 de piedra.
