Por desgracia, no es un r\u00e9cord que Estados Unidos quiera batir:  Las infecciones de transmisi\u00f3n sexual vuelven a alcanzar un m\u00e1ximo hist\u00f3rico por cuarto a\u00f1o consecutivo.  Aunque las infecciones de transmisi\u00f3n sexual (ITS) han asolado a los seres humanos durante siglos, muchos cient\u00edficos de los Centros para el Control y la Prevenci\u00f3n de Enfermedades (CDC) tienen nuevas y graves preocupaciones.<\/p>\n<p>Las ITS pueden estar causadas por bacterias o virus. Las infecciones causadas por bacterias suelen poder tratarse y curarse con el uso de antibi\u00f3ticos. Sin embargo, muchos m\u00e9dicos de los CDC est\u00e1n muy preocupados por la resistencia a los antibi\u00f3ticos, es decir, cuando las bacterias desarrollan la capacidad de sobrevivir incluso cuando el paciente toma antibi\u00f3ticos.  La Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud ha estudiado 77 pa\u00edses e informa de que las bacterias de la gonorrea son cada vez m\u00e1s resistentes a los antibi\u00f3ticos utilizados para tratar la infecci\u00f3n.  Los estudios muestran que en 2013 solo 1% de las bacterias de la gonorrea eran resistentes, pero en 2017 el n\u00famero aument\u00f3 a 4%.  Se est\u00e1n desarrollando muy pocos antibi\u00f3ticos que puedan eliminar las formas resistentes de la infecci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5031 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/candorhealthed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/std-infographic-complete-555x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"614\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Aunque no se trata de una preocupaci\u00f3n inmediata, es una tendencia un tanto inquietante teniendo en cuenta las estad\u00edsticas recientes. El n\u00famero total de casos de clamidia, gonorrea y s\u00edfilis ha aumentado m\u00e1s de 31% en los \u00faltimos 4 a\u00f1os.  De las tres, la clamidia representa el mayor n\u00famero de casos, pasando de una tasa de 251 casos por 100.000 en el a\u00f1o 2000 a 529 por 100.000 en 2017. La tasa de gonorrea, la segunda bacteria m\u00e1s com\u00fan, se ha m\u00e1s que duplicado desde 2013. Aunque la clamidia y la gonorrea no suelen presentar s\u00edntomas en las mujeres y a veces tampoco en los hombres, si no se tratan estas infecciones pueden evolucionar a enfermedad inflamatoria p\u00e9lvica en las mujeres (una afecci\u00f3n potencialmente mortal) e infecci\u00f3n de los \u00f3rganos reproductores masculinos, y ambas complicaciones pueden conducir a la infertilidad.<\/p>\n<p>La s\u00edfilis se ha multiplicado por m\u00e1s de 5 desde el a\u00f1o 2000, cuando alcanz\u00f3 su m\u00ednimo hist\u00f3rico (5.979 casos). Por desgracia, en 2017 hubo 30.644 personas infectadas. Aunque la s\u00edfilis es f\u00e1cil de detectar y tratar, es una enfermedad muy grave en las mujeres embarazadas.  Los embarazos pueden resultar en un aborto espont\u00e1neo y 40% de los fetos con s\u00edfilis llevados a t\u00e9rmino nacen muertos.  Los que sobreviven pueden nacer ciegos, sordos, con da\u00f1os neurol\u00f3gicos o deformidades \u00f3seas y da\u00f1os en los \u00f3rganos internos.  Una madre tiene una probabilidad 80% de transmitir la bacteria al feto si no recibe tratamiento, y lamentablemente el n\u00famero de reci\u00e9n nacidos infectados ha aumentado de 362 casos en 2013 a 918 en 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Otro grave motivo de preocupaci\u00f3n es que de los aproximadamente 2 millones de nuevos casos de ITS registrados el a\u00f1o pasado, unos 50% de ellos se produjeron en j\u00f3venes de entre 15 y 24 a\u00f1os.  Aunque los estudios muestran que el embarazo adolescente est\u00e1 disminuyendo, muchos j\u00f3venes no se dan cuenta de que las actividades sexuales m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del coito tambi\u00e9n pueden transmitir los virus y bacterias que causan las ITS.  \u00bfCu\u00e1l podr\u00eda ser la causa de estas cifras crecientes? J. Dennis Fortenberry, presidente de la Asociaci\u00f3n Americana de Enfermedades de Transmisi\u00f3n Sexual, informa de que \u00e9l y otros m\u00e9dicos creen que la culpa la tienen los recortes en la financiaci\u00f3n tanto de la educaci\u00f3n preventiva como de la atenci\u00f3n sanitaria. Los profesionales afirman que la educaci\u00f3n sexual integral, temprana y frecuente, es un buen comienzo. Si alguien est\u00e1 preocupado por su\u00a0<em>personal<\/em>\u00a0salud sexual, recomiendan que la gente se haga las pruebas y se informe sobre los factores de riesgo reales de las infecciones de transmisi\u00f3n sexual.<\/p>\n<p>Teniendo en cuenta que aproximadamente 1\/3 de todas las personas con una ITS no muestran s\u00edntomas, las parejas sexuales corren peligro si no conocen el estado de salud de sus parejas.
